Apply psychodynamic theory to such delinquent acts as shoplifting and breaking and entering a house.
According to the psychodynamic perspective, delinquency can be explained as the result of an overly dominant id and an underdeveloped super ego. The psychodynamic theory conceptualises that our personality is made up of three distinct components: the id, ego and superego. The id operates on the pleasure principle, and seeks the fulfilment of instinctual desires that are mostly sexual and agressive in nature. On the other hand, the superego operates on the morality principle and is the internalization of the values and norms of our society. The superego directs our behaviour towards what is considered to be “right”. In cases wherein the superego is underdeveloped, the id is allowed to reign an individual’s personality. This would, theoretically lead them to engage in delinquent acts as individuals would only be motivated to fulfill their pleasures and desires, without regard for rules and regulations.
