The US Transportation Department (USDOT or DOT) is a U.S. government federal cabinet department that is involved in transport. On 15 October 1966 it was created by act of Congress, and on 1 April 1967 it was launched. It is ruled by U.S. Transportation Secretary.

The Department of Transport (DOT) is the government's cabinet agency for the maintenance and development of the nation's infrastructure and transportation systems. DOT plannes the movement of American people with vehicles , trucks, trains, ships and planes, from routes to airlines to railways. In terms of ground transportation, government and local authorities are largely the main players of government in the construction of new roads or public transit systems. However, DOT is a major contributor to improving the way Americans transit to lower levels of government.

In terms of air travel, the Department of Transportation has a more realistic role to play as it controls commercial airlines and airports with the goal of supporting the sector as well as ensuring passenger safety. DOT has taken the highest flack from all of its departments as it operates the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), an behavior which is also critical of not keeping up with potential issues.
