You travel to a continent that you’ve never traveled to before and you decide that you want to start studying community ecology on this continent. First determine whether the community that you are studying is considered an equilibrium (or stable) community. Describe what things you would study, why you would study them, and how understanding that would help inform whether the community was in equilibrium.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The community is considered to be a stable community if the size of population of all species remain constant and should be in a state of climax community. According to Clements, a stable / climax community is defined as the final, terminal, stable community developed in the process of succession that maintains itself for over longer period in equilibrium with the prevailing environmental conditions. Resistance and Resilence are the components of stability for a community. The environmental factors should be in balance. It should have the following characteristics

S.No. Form Characteristics
1 Unity All species are to be in the form of an organised unit. The life or growth forms of plants indicate its climate.
2 stability The community to be stable with the climate. The climax community should not be replaced through competition. The community should have few characteristic dominant species.
3 Origin and phylogenetic relations The stable community should be treated as organism in terms of birth, growth, development and maturity. The developmental stages of the cmmunity should have their own characteristics, reflecting the type of climate. As organism changing with age the climax communities should undergo changes and be stablely established.

The things to be studied are:

  1. Climate - The stability of the community is studied by the regional climate. A stable climate will lead to stable community.
  2. Temperature - Optimum temperature is needed for the plants to conduct photosynthesis and for metabolism of animals
  3. Light - Light as a universal food source has to be abundant for the biotic components.
  4. Availability of Oxygen and Carbondioxide - These abiotic factors in sufficient quantities help in the survival of species
  5. Species richness - The species should exist independent of each other without much competition
  6. Size of the population - The population size has to be constant maintaining balance between different species.
  7. Resistance - The community should be resistant to invasions by alien species and natural and man made disturbances
  8. Productivity - The productivity should show variation every year in a stable community

Two vehicles travel along two distinct roads. The first vehicle traveled in the first roadway with a spot speed equal to “A veh/hr”, while the second vehicle traveled along the second roadway with a space mean speed equal to “A veh/hr”. If the two vehicles originated at the same position and will arrive at the same points, who will arrive at the destination first? Elucidate, and expound your idea based on the fundamental definitions and your logical reasoning.

On an isolated island you discover a vertebrate animal that has never been described before. It has feathers, a feathered, bird-like tail, lays hard-shelled eggs and can fly, but it has teeth instead of a beak. Provide an explanation for the evolution of this animal and possible relationship with other clades of vertebrates that accounts for this unusual combination of features.
