How can you, as a counselor, avoid becoming "stuck" in a particular theoretical framework? Identify specific ways that you can ensure you continue to grow. What are some trends you are interested in learning about now that you understand counseling theory?
Ans. (a):- As a counselor, we must avoid becoming stuck in a particular theoretical framework to best serve our clients and remain ethical. Collaboration with clients will help to create a counseling plan. It will offer a reasonable promise of success. These are consistent with the abilities, temperament, developmental level and circumstances of the client.
There are several ways I can remain flexible with theories. First of all, during internships, I can partner with counselors to appropriately apply different theories under supervision. With the guidance of these experienced counselors, we can ensure the client gets what he or she needs while I practice the process of different theories.
Ans. (b):- One way that can ensure us continue to grow can be an internship experience that would not only develop competency, but it would also develop my confidence in trying new theories. Another way that can ensure is to operate from the theoretical framework and from these theoretical framework, complementary techniques and interventions can be borrowed very easily. This would maintain a level of competency while learning other theories step-by-step.
Ans.(c):- One trend I am interested in learning about is that we can use mindfulness that may result in reducing anxiety. I am also interested in learning about online therapy which can teach me to learn how methods might or might not be effective in this format of therapy and any techniques experienced counselors have begun to develop for the online environment.
