Good online networking
Many people dislike networking because it's an imposition to ask for help from a real stranger. Since it is human nature to want to help somebody, I think you're going to find that most people are going to be receptive if you approach them the right way.
Whether you meet people online or offline, by considering what you need from the contact, you should prepare for networking conversations in advance. Make sure that your planned request is reasonable, given that you know the person barely. Using an example from my own life, asking for 30 minutes of advice on the book publishing industry works a lot better than asking me to refer you to my agent.
Be friendly, respectful and brief when approaching a potential contact, and be very clear about your request. Always bear in mind that you are doing a favor by the person. If you're connecting online and he says he's in the middle of something, ask if you can talk and be aware of his time commitments at another time. If your request involves a conversation and you are in the same geographical location, try an in-person meeting can't hurt. When you sit down with your contact, offer to pay any expenses associated with the meeting, and remember to send him a thank you note afterward.
It's very important to have a clear reason why you want to meet this particular person when reaching out to someone you don't know yet. This goes beyond shared background— there are many people sharing an alma mater or a former employer. This gives the person a reason you specifically need them, and therefore they are more likely to give you some of their valuable time.
For example, maybe you're considering a career moving from a large company to a startup and you're identifying someone who's been following a similar career path, living locally and sharing your passion for great user experience — share that with your prospective contact and they'll understand why you want to talk to them and be more likely to want to help.
Bad online networking
Nestle's Handling of Facebook Comments- This started as an apparently innocent post asking users not to use any altered version of their logo, which could result in their removal from the page. As soon as users commented that the request seemed to come from an authoritarian' Big Brother,' Nestle became aggressive and began posting responses that readers considered arrogant. For curbing freedom of speech, some users blasted Nestle while others threatened to stop using their products.
People tend to feel bad when they compare with others. Because social media presents an often carefully self-cured look into other people's lives–from cosmetic Snapchat filters to Instagram stories that only show the best parts of a holiday rather than all the arguments behind the scenes–the study compares time spent on social media to "seeing the highlight reels of everyone else."
