In what ways does a tightrope walker’s pole increase stability?
Answer:
The main purpose or intention of holding a pole during tightrope walking is to maintain a constant torque acting on the walker. This can be made possible by increasing the moment of inertia.
Holding a pole increases the moment of inertia (due to increased length) which can balance the external heavy torques which can make the walker fall out.
Small winds or such external disturbances can cause external torque on the walker. So holding a pole can oppose this torque by increasing moment of inertia. Hence the tightrope walker can balance himself throughout the journey.
