Provided a detailed procedure (preperation, purification, and analysis) to use in lab for the reaction 3,4-dimethyl-3-pentanol as a starting material, with 3,4-dimethyl-3-pentene (45% yield) and 3,4-dimethyl-3-chloropentane (55% yield) as the products. Procedure should include quantites (w correct stoichimetry) of chemicals required. Mention all techniques required during preperation, purification and analysis. Name all glassware.
Procedure:
In a clean and dry two neck round bottom flask equipped with reflux
condensor, add 1 mole of 3,4-dimethyl-3-pentanol and add 1.5 mole
of HCl and heat it to reflux for 6-8 h. Monitor the progress of the
reaction with TLC. After the whole starting material is consumed,
cool down the reaction mixture and neutralized the excess of acid
using saturated slution of NaHCO3. The extract the reaction mixture
using diethyl ether, wash throughly with water and dry over
Na2SO4.
Purify the reaction mixture using column chromatography.
