****Describe why it arises, in other words, what part of the
endocrine regulatory mechanism is not working properly.
****Explain why the dysfunction leads to the symptoms typically
associated with the condition.
****Describe how the condition is treated and why that treatment would be effective.
Graves disease
1. Grave's disease is a thyroid disorder which results from abnormal stimulation of thyroid gland. The body produces an antibody ( Thyrotropin receptor antibody) that overrides normal regulation of thyroid causing overproduction. It is also a common cause of hyperthyroidism.
One of the common symptoms of this disease is Grave's ophthalmopathy where inflammation and other immune system affects muscles and tissues around eyes resulting in bulged, puffy and reddened eyes.
There is reddening as well as thickening of skin on shins and tops of feet.
3. The primary treatment goals are to inhibit the overproduction of thyroid hormones and lessen the severity of symptoms Treatment include Antithyroid medications, Radioactive iodine and surgery.
Antithyroid medications interferes with thyroid gland's ability to produce hormones. Radioactive iodine is used as a capsule or water based and destroys thyroid tissue cells to lower the hormone production. Surgery is usually the last option where partial or total removal of thyroid is carried out.
