In 3-4 paragraphs, summarize if you believe probation and parole officers should carry a firearm? Why or why not? What are the advantages and disadvantages regarding probation and parole officers carrying firearms?

• There are mnay states which allow probation and parole officers to carry gun sanctioned by law.In my opinion,they shouldnt be having a gun as they are not police officer,they are only meant to maintain a check of the behaviour and whereabouts of the parolee.Police officers are meant to carry guns since their job is more dangerous,and it works as symbol for their position in the society fighting against crime.
• If a probation officer faces a dangerous situation,their duty is to find a safe place and call the police rather than using a weapon themselves.Carrying a gun means that the parole officer would be ready to use it when needed.It could be a disadvantage as it would add to the costs of the probation department budget and also involve time and training to be provided to the parole officers.And training is not an one time affair,it needs to be ongoing.
• Lieke parole officers there are many other government employees like nurses,doctors,social workers,caseworkers who deal with criminals,and sometimes interactions with them could turn tense and angry.It is not possible to give guns to these employees and train them.
• Police officers are have a specific training in using non-lethal force,and using weapons as the last resort.If probation officers start to carry guns,and if any confrontation happens it could lead to fight for the gun.They would be required extra training.
• What they need is training in non-violent conflict resolution and not deadly force.
• Probation officers are meant to guide parolees who have commited crimes to become an effective citizen of the society and not drive them to the edge to indulge in violent confrontations.
• People who support the carrying of guns by probation officers,think it is required for their safety,if at all the parolee physically attacks them considering them to be a part of the criminal justice system,which is why probation officers dont wear a uniform.
• Sometimes the criminals could be armed themselves which could be life threatening for the parole officer,so in that case some states have allowed to keep guns for their own safety.
