25 ml of 0.10 M CH3CO2H is titrated with 0.10 M NaOH. What is the pH after 15 ml of NaOH have been added? Ka for CH3CO2H = 1.8X10^-5

Solutions

Expert Solution

Ka = 1.8 x 10^-5

pKa = -logKa

pKa = -log (1.8 x 10^-5)

pKa = 4.74

millimoles of CH3COOH = 25 x 0.1 = 2.5

millimoles of NaOH = 15 x 0.1 = 1.5

CH3COOH   + NaOH ----------------------> CH3COONa + H2O

2.5                  1.5                                       0                   0

1.0                   0.0                                     1.5                   1.5

pH =pKa + log [CH3COONa / CH3COOH]

pH =4.74 + log (1.5 / 1.0)

pH = 4.92
