The concept of slab panels are designed as in a single unit, however each consisting of one or more slab items (slab panels). When it comes to design you then need to conceptualize the slab as a series of design panels. Each design panel will have its own results. Different reinforcement can be selected in different panels. More often than not, pattern loading (some panels loaded and others not). In reference to the afore mentioned; produce and explain five types panel used for slab construction. Annotated sketches can be made to support the answers.
1.One way slabs on Beams : - Cast in situ method is used to construct one way slabs on beams which involves fixing of forms followed with the installation of reinforcements and finally pouring fresh concrete. These are most suitable for spans of 3-6m.
2. One way Joist Slab :- It consists of a floor slab supported by reinfoced concrete ribs. The ribs are usually tapered. The ribs are supported on girders that rest on columns.
3. Waffle Slab (Grid Slab) :- It is a type of reinforced concrete slab that contains square grids with deep sides.Grid Slab are suitable for spans of 9-15m.
4.Flat Slabs:- This is a reinforced slab supported directly by columns without the use of beams. This type of slab is easy to construct and require little formwork. The loads are directly transferred to columns.
5. Two way slabs on Beams :- The formwork require is more than one way slab but construction is similat to construction of one way slab.Slabs on beams are suitable for spans between 6m to 9m.These type of slabs increase stiffness of beams.Additional formwork for beams is needed.
