Cindy and Rob have been together for several years. All their close friends know that Rob has on several occasions verbally and physically abused Cindy. Many of them have pleaded with Cindy to break off the relationship, but she refused to do so. What are some possible reasons why Cindy would elect to stay in an abusive relationship? If Cindy were your sister or a close friend, how would you handle the situation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

there are several reasons why a woman would stay in an abusive relationship, which are as follows:

  • If Cindy has begun to have distorted thoughts. This means that even though her friends are supporting her, being controlled would be leading the her to self blame or doubts. As a result, she might not have the courage to move forward,
  • She might feel that this is what she deserves and and even though she breaks up, any other person would also behave with her in a similar manner.
  • If she would be afraid of rob. She might think that even after breaking up, he might not allow her to go and she might feel trapped.
  • She might be thinking that giving some time to rob may change him and he might change for the good.
  • If she might not be financially independent which would make her think twice before leaving him.

As a friend or sister, I would talk to her, so that I could figure out the real reason as to why she was not leaving him. Also, if it is a financial problem or a problem of support, I would stand by her.
