Photosynthetic pigments are present in green peppers, red peppers, and carrots, so can red peppers, green peppers, or carrots carry out photosynthesis? Please explain in detail.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Solution

Yes red pepper, bell pepper and carrot can perform photosynthesis because

  • Peppers start off green, which unsurprisingly is due to the presence of chlorophyll pigments.

  • These are vital for photosynthesis in plants, and actually come in two subtly different forms, chlorophyll a and chlorophyll b.

  • As the pepper ripens, these chlorophyll pigments start to decompose, and other types of pigments start to take their place.
  • All of the different colours of peppers that follow green are due to the presence of carotenoid pigments.
  • Small amounts of these pigments are present even in green peppers, but their synthesis is increased as the pepper ripens.
  • Yellow peppers owe their colouration primarily to violaxanthin, though a number of other yellow-orange pigments, including lutein and beta-carotene, also play their part.
  • Lutein also contributes to the yellow colour of egg yolks, whereas beta-carotene is well known as the compound behind the bright orange colour of carrots.
  • Carrot also contain carotene.

Matthew is red-green colorblind, meaning that he has a difficult time distinguishing between red and green hues. Matthew reads online that approximately 8% of men have this type of colorblindness. He conducts a random survey of 197 men, and finds that only 12 of them are red-green colorblind. At the 1% significance level, conduct and interpret a hypothesis test to determine if the proportion of men with red-green colorblindness is less than 8%.

Urn A contains 5 green and 4 red balls, and Urn B contains 3 green and 6 red balls. One ball is drawn from Urn A and transferred to Urn B. Then one ball is drawn from Urn B and transferred to Urn A. Let X = the number of green balls in Urn A after this process. List the possible values for X and then find the entire probability distribution for X.
