There are many operations in oil and gas industry such as drilling, casing, cementing, perforation, well logging and well stimulation. Mention the possible hazard (2.5 marks) and safety measures (2.5 marks) that an engineer must keep in mind during cementing operation.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The possible hazards during cementing operation are:-

(1) Get strucked by high pressure line failures

(2) Falling byhigh pressure connection failures results due to worn hammer

(3) Irritation of eyes, nose ,throat ,respiratory system etc due to exposure of cement dust.

(4) Lung cancer and silicosis due to exposure of silica during cementing operation.

(5) Severe skin damage and irritation of skin from chemical burns.

(6)Injury of workers due to use of unguarded machinery and old equipments .

(7) Hearing loss of workers due to excessive exposure to sounds and vibration from cementing mecheniary.

(8) Due to improper lifting of materials it can cause strains in body and lead to sprains.

(9) Cementing on confined spaces may lead to breathing problems to workers .

(10)Falling due to slippery surface caused during cementing operation

The safety measures that an engineer must keep in mind during cementing operation are :-

(1) Proper alignment of high pressure lines during operation .

(2) By proper inspection of equipment at regular intervels during cementing operation .

(3) Preplan the location of equipments before cementing operation.

(4)Use proper lifting techniques, mechanical lifting aids whenever neccesary.

(5)Wear properly personal protective equipment for respiratory and fall protection.

(6) Conduct pre job inspection to avoid any kind of hazards during cementing operation .

(7) Clear all non essential personnel before operation .

(8) For direct equipment movement use spotter so that work can be performed properly.

(9) By keeping working area properly levelled in order to avoid slipping .

(8) By giving proper instructions to workers in order to avoid hazard during operation.

"An oil and gas company is considering whether to begin drilling a new oil field. The company will need to pay $4.6 million as an initial investment in order to extract the oil. The company will operate the field for a total of 5 years, during which its annual profit will be $3,344,000. During the 6th year, the company will not operate or gain any revenue from the oil field, but it will need to pay $8,990,000 in environmental remediation...

Horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracking have changed the prospects of the oil industry from an industry facing production shortages to one facing surpluses. To date the United States has been the only country to embrace these new technologies. It is widely believed that many other countries have formations and basins that would be productive using these new technologies. Look up a couple of articles and list your opinions as to why other countries are not adopting horizontal drilling and hydraulic...

During oil drilling operations, components of the drilling assembly may suffer from sulfide stress cracking. An article reported on a study in which the composition of a standard grade of steel was analyzed. The following data on y = threshold stress (% SMYS) and x = yield strength (MPa) was read from a graph in the article (which also included the equation of the least squares line). x 636 645 712 707 837 820 810 870 856 923 878 937...

A company is considering drilling a development well. Wellsite preparation, drilling and testing of the well is expected to cost $2.2 million. Completion of the well and the field equipment necessary to get the well ready for production (wellhead, tubing, flowline, etc.) would cost $1.4 million. Company geologists have suggested that there is a 20% probability that the well will be dry. If that is the case, abandonment and reclamation costs would be $150,000. In the event the well is...
