You are sitting at your desk trying to study for a test you are very nervous about and all you can focus on is the stereo playing in the other room. You get up, go to the other room and turn down the stereo. Beginning with the external stimuli (the sound) and ending with your movement to the other room, describe: the brain structures that are involved, in sequence and the the nervous system involvement.

Solutions

Expert Solution

The entire sensations and thoughts gets streamlined as one unified experience at the frontal lobe of the brain, which is often referred as the cognitive brain.

The amygdala and the hippocampus are two important parts of the brain and play a vital role in the production and processing of anxiety and fear. The amygdala is the communication hub in the brain and the hippocampus encodes the events associated with threats into memories.

  • The person is nervous, heard the sound coming from the stereo in the other room.
  • The amygdala alerts the rest of the brain that there is a threat to the test winning because there is an emotional memory stored in the brain which is linked to fear of failure.
  • The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex in the frontal lobe further strengthens the fear or anxiety signals from the amygdala. The person may have a fear of failure or anxious about the test winning.
  • The brain encountered a threat and occurrence of a surge of chemicals happened.
  • A natural boost to the overall perception, reflect time and velocity happened.
  • The person went to the other room and turned down the stereo.

You are trying to study for a physics exam, but your kids keep distracting you. You design a game where you can both play with your kids and study physics. You take two of your children’s blocks and place them on a table. Block 2 (mass = 0.3 kg) is at the edge of the table. Block 1 (mass = 0.2 kg) is held against a spring (spring constant = 500 N/m) that is compressed a distance of 0.08 m....

Consider a group of people sitting in a classroom acting very much alike: listening to the professor, taking notes, raising a hand to ask an occasional question. Now consider the same group of people at the beach on a sunny afternoon – some are swimming and riding the waves, some are reading quietly under an umbrella, some are sleeping in the sun, some are watching people, some are running and laughing and wrestling in the sea. Using ideas from chapter...
