Show how the breeding of vermilion/brown, cinnabar/brown, and scarlet/brown double mutant female Drosophila with single mutant scarlet male Drosophila would enable differentiation between the 3 double mutant strains. Show genotypes and phenotypes.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Generally, normal (wild type) of drosophila eye color is red but, in the case provided for study shows that vermillion/brown-the eye color is more like orange, cinnabar/brown the double mutant female drosophila eye color is white and scarlet/brown double mutant drosophila exhibits white color eyes.

The ABC or traffic transpoters superfamily is large and growing group of active transports in eukaryotes and prokaryotes. It is been postulated that pigment precurssors are tranported into pigment cells by menmbrane transported known as ABC tranporters and are encoded with white (w), scarlet (st) and brown (bw) genes of Drosophila sps. The phenotype of the test cross progeny resembles either with parental normal features (double mutant) or with mutant features (single mutant). In the progency obtained, three phenotypes are been controlled by three different mutant phenotypes and hence it provides us an information that same gene is responsible and controlling all the three double mutant characters. Mutations in these kinds of genes results in altered phenotypes of its eye color.

Show how breeding females of the vermilion/brown, cinnabar/brown, and scarlet/brown double mutants with males of the scarlet strain (instead of the cinnabar strain) would also have enabled us to differentiate between the three double mutant Drosophila strains. Include the genotypes of the breeding partners and the offspring, and the phenotypes of the offspring.

A Drosophila female homozygous mutant for two recessive genes (a and b) is crossed to a wild-type male. The F1 are all wild-type. You cross a Drosophila female with kidney-shaped and brown eyes with a male that has wildtype eye shape and color. Kidney-shaped eyes are found in females that are heterozygous for the bar eyed mutation. Bar eyed females are homozygous for the bar eyed mutant allele, whereas bar eyed males are hemizygous for the mutation. Brown eyes are an autosomal recessive mutation. Attention: Half of the resulting F1 has brown eyes! Would you expect to see bar eyed females in the...

Kindly show how to do in Excel: Suppose that the weight of a typical American female follows a normal distribution with μ = 140 lb. and σ = 20 lb. Also, suppose 80.15% of all American females weigh more than I weigh. What fractions of American females weigh more than 165 pounds? How much do I weigh?
