Sustainable Concept

Air pollution in Asia has worsened since 2000 and is responsible for deaths of thousands of people in Beijing, Jakarta, Seoul and Manila. The pollution is a result of the use of fossil fuels by the industry and transport sectors. The problem got aggravated in Asia due to the use of poor quality fuel, inefficient method of energy production, use of vehicles in poor condition and traffic congestion. This was revealed during a research conducted by World Bank and Stockholm Development Institute. The research states that air pollution in the continent has surpassed the combined emissions in Europe and North America. The deaths caused by fine particulate matter far exceed those caused by sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, ozone and lead. The health cost in major Asian cities now exceed for 15-18 percent of urban income expenditure, claims World Bank officials.

a) A comprehensive campaign to address air pollution need to be launched through school children, what programme (one) would you envisage for this. What is outcome anticipated?

b) There is a sudden decision to remove all vehicles from the road that fails to meet specified norms of emission level within a specified time period. As part of citizen forum you are requested to give views on the enforced regulation. State your views on this.

c) A massive campaign on environmental degradation is to be initiated. Bring out a slogan and the key message that need to be addressed.

d) Suppose you are a Carbon Credit Auditor appointed to assess the greenhouse gas emission reduction strategies. Identify a component of assessment and brief the methodology that could be adopted in connection with this.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A. Things school childrens to do

1. Getting awareness on air pollution in his parents and neighbors.

2. Explain the problems casued due to polluted air. Like, Human health problems :asthma attacks, reduced lung function, pulmonary cancer, coughing etc.

3. Tell them to use public transportation.

4. Tell them to use bicycle for short distances.

Results:

By telling them they change the way of thinking and way of living.it the primary step for control of pollution.

B.My views on this:

1. Completely ban the vehicles (which is more than 20 years used). This is good idea to control large pollution.

2. Pollution certificate: every one needs this pollution certificate who use the roads. It's a good idea,by this we can know whether the user is aligible for driving the vehicle or not.

3. Driving license : those who are not having driving license their vehicles has to be removed. It's a good idea. By this we can reduce the traffic volume on roads.

4. By following certain traffic acts we can air pollution can be minimized. Those who are not follow these rules their vehicles should be removed.

C. Slogan: "Be a part of solution not a part of pollution "

As a human being we need to protect our nature, but we pollute our environment and our health too. Be aware of the problems occred when pollution occres. Know about the consequences we face when pollution is more. Use 3R (reduse, reuse, recycle)formula, follow the traffic rules. Refuse to use the plastic bags. Plant trees (which gives oxygen to us),use less pollution fuels. Go walk around and enjoy the nature don't pollute it.

D. Carbon statagy: a long term action plan to reduce carbon dioxide from industries. Global warming is caused by Green house gasses( mainly due to carbon dioxide nearly 85 percent).

By carbon credit auditor we can know the total carbon produced due to employee (by job, project, department)and by industries.

By reducing the unnecessary transportation, using of quality oils, using of solar vehicles,by cleaning gas before releasing in to the air.cut waste and increase recycling. Planting trees.

The health department of a large city has developed an air pollution index that measures the level of several air pollutants that cause respiratory distress in humans. The following table gives the pollution index (on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst) for 7 randomly selected summer days and the number of patients with acute respiratory problems admitted to the emergency rooms of the city’s hospitals. The city of Delhi has some of the very worst air pollution in the world. One key source of that air pollution are motor vehicles. The city is contemplating ways to reduce air pollution from motor vehicles. Suppose they know that the marginal benefits of abatement are equal to MB(a) = 154 -10a, which comes entirely from health benefits to the local population. There is no uncertainty about the benefits of abatement. But, the Delhi government is uncertain about costs....

Suppose that the federal government has decided that air pollution produced by gasoline should be reduced. To achieve this objective, the federal government is considering the introduction of an additional tax of 50 cents per litre on gasoline. Using a demand and supply diagram illustrate the effect of such a tax on the price of gasoline. Will the consumers of gasoline or the producers of gasoline bear the highest tax burden (incidence)? Air pollution is one critical issue that the United States economy has been struggling to deal with. A vehicle creates a lot of pollution that has negative externality effects in our economy. Should the government force car manufacturers to increase fuel efficiency standards, or should the government increase fuel taxes? When evaluating this question, discuss the...
