why can one say that airplane wings and race car spoilers are inverses of each other?...

why can one say that airplane wings and race car spoilers are inverses of each other? What is the use for each of them and how do each work here?

Solutions

Expert Solution

Cars have spoilers to increase their grip on the road.

Normally the weight of a car is the only thing that forces the tires down onto the pavement. Without spoilers, the only way to increase the grip would be to increase the weight, or to change the material of the tire. The only problem with increasing the weight is that it doesn't help in turns, where you really want to grip. All that extra weight has inertia, which you have to overcome to turn, so increasing the weight doesn't help at all. The way the spoiler works is like an airplane wing, but in reverse way. The spoiler actually generates what's called 'down force' on the body of the car.

in airoplane wings in upper side length is more so air has to travel with higher velocity and because of bernoulli's relation we can see that due to this pressure decreases this given a net upward force to the airoplane in case of spoilers exactly opposite happens.

In the figure here, a red car and a green car move toward each other in adjacent lanes and parallel to an x axis. At time t = 0, the red car is at xr = 0 and the green car is at xg = 222 m. If the red car has a constant velocity of 25.0 km/h, the cars pass each other at x = 43.0 m. On the other hand, if the red car has a constant velocity...

A 880-kg race car can drive around an unbanked turn at a maximum speed of 44 m/s without slipping. The turn has a radius of 120 m. Air flowing over the car's wing exerts a downward-pointing force (called the downforce) of 9800 N on the car. (a) What is the coefficient of static friction between the track and the car's tires? (b) What would be the maximum speed if no downforce acted on the car?
