Write a balanced molecular equation for the reaction of each of the following metals with dilute hydrochloric acid. If no reaction occurs, put NR. (a) Ni (b) Fe (c) Ag (d) Au

Solutions

Expert Solution

  1. Ni

Nickel reacts with diluted hydrogen chloride to produce nickel (II) chloride and hydrogen.

Balanced molecular equation is

Ni (s) + 2HCl (aq)→ NiCl2 + H2 (g)

This is slow reaction.

  1. Fe

Fe reacts with HCl and produces iron(II) chloride and hydrogen gas.

Balanced molecular equation is

Fe(s) + 2HCl (aq) → FeCl2 (aq) + H2(g)

  1. Ag

Ag do not react with dil. HCl, therefore NR (No reaction)

This is because, like other reactive metals, silver cannot displace hydrogen from HCl.

Reason is Silver is below hydrogen in the (electrochemical series) reactivity series, so it cannot displace the hydrogen from HCl.

  1. Au

Au do not react with dil. HCl, therefore NR (No reaction)

This is because, like other reactive metals, Au cannot displace hydrogen from HCl.

Reason is Au is below the hydrogen in the (electrochemical series) reactivity series, so it cannot displace the hydrogen from HCl. Therefore there is no reaction.
