Give an example of a research question that would be suitable for computing a:

a) Correlation coefficient

b) Regression line

Solutions

Expert Solution

(a)
Example of a research question that would be suitable for computing a correlation coefficient:

Research Question:

Are the two variables: x = number of hours spent on videogames and y = marks in examination related?

EXPLANATION: Data on the x = number of hours spent on videogames and y = marks in examination can be collected. Correlation (r) between x and y can be calculated. If r is near 0, we can conclude that x = number of hours spent on videogames and y = marks in examination are not related. If r is near + 1, we can conclude that x = number of hours spent on videogames and y = marks in examination are directly related. If r is near - 1, we can conclude that x = number of hours spent on videogames and y = marks in examination are inversely related.

(b)

Example of a research question that would be suitable for computing a Regression line:

Research Question:

What is the linear relation between y = the yield of a crop as a function of x = rain fall

EXPLANATION: Data on y = the yield of a crop and x = rain fall can be collected. Regression line can be fitted. For any value of x = rain fall, value of y = the yield of crop can be calculated.

Give a plausible example of a three-variable research problem in which partial correlation would be a useful analysis. Define X1, X2, and Y. Make sure that you indicate which of your three variables is the "controlled for" variable ( X2). What results might you expect to obtain for this partial correlation, and how would you interpret your results (e.g., spurious correlation, mediation, moderation, and so on)?

Correlational Research A)Strength of correlation: correlation coefficient Explain what it is. Use an example. The statistic has a value from 0 to 1: 0 = no relationship between 2 variables > .3, a significant relationship > .5, a strong relationship b)Weakness of correlational research Explain how correlational research only describes relationships between variables. It can’t be used to test for cause and effect. Correlation doesn’t imply causation, only co-occurrence.
