1. By using measure of center we can summarize the whole data as it gives a single value which describes the middle or center of the whole data. Thus we can get idea about the whole data.

By using measure of variation one come to know about how much the data spread from the center of the data.

A. The measure of center are mean, median, mode.

By mean median and mode we get the average value, the middle value and the value with highest frequency of the entire data so we can picturize the whole data by calculating these measure.

B. The measure of variation is range and variance. By using range the smallest interval withing which the data are spread can be known. The importance to use variance measure is to know how much our data is consistent. If a data has higher variance then it means that the data are less consistent. And if the data has low variance then it means the data is more consistent. There are many other measure like inter quartile range, mean deviation about mean etc. Which also are measure of variation and all of them have the more or less same importance.
