You are preparing a heparin flush bag. It requires that heparin (1000 U/mL) be added to a 250-mL bag of saline to prepare a concentration of 5 U/mL.
How many units (U) are added to the bag?
How many mL of Heparin are added to bag?
Answers
1000 units/ml of heparin is added in 250ml saline to get a concentration of 5000 units/ml.
a) Units of the heparin added can be calculated by:
1 ml= 1000 units
250 ml = X units
X unit= 250 × 1000 = 250000 units
b) ml of heparin added can be calculated by:
ml = 1ml × 1000 units
5000 units 1
= 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2 ml
