Why is sociological thinking so important for the well-being of society during this pandemic?
What values or beliefs in U.S. culture might make it difficult for people to understand the importance of social solidarity and follow social distancing?
Have you seen any examples of social solidarity happening during this pandemic? Explain
American follow individualistic and materialistic culture which force them to look to maximize their pleasure and happiness over anything or anyone else. This would mean that they have built a belief that their happiness lies in the materialistic things that are present outside them, especially in the society in terms of eating, drinking and moving out in the society. This has made it difficult to many in terms of staying in their homes at this time of the pandemic. They would like to maximize their happiness without thinking about the lives of others in terms of spreading the virus. However, there are other events that has brought out the social solidarity in the American society in which people who are able, have contributed food and other supplies to those who are poor and jobless. This is because of the fact that many have lost their jobs and struggle to maintain their family thus starve. There are many individuals and organizations that attend to the plights of these people. Thus, COVID-19 pandemic has brought out the vulnerability of people who are selfish and also people who are selfless. It has also brought out the society’s discriminatory practices in housing, healthcare and employments which has left most of the ordinary people struggle to cope with their day today activities.
