Response

Treatment

Favorable

Unfavorable

Placebo

16

48

Drug

40

20

What is the probability of a favorable response for those who took the drug? And for those who took the placebo? Test to see if there is an association between the treatment and the response. You may use computer software to do the calculations, but you must show the equations and values (other than the data in the table) of parameters in the equations. (2 pts)

Solutions

Expert Solution

probability of a favorable response for those who took the drug

=Number of favorable response with drug/total drugs taken by the number of people

=40/(40+20) = 40/60 =0.67

probability of a favorable response for those who took the placebo

=Number of favorable response with placebo/total placebo taken by the number of people

=16/(16+48)

=0.25

#now to check the association we need to do the chi sq test

Ho: There is no relation between Response and Treatment

Ha: There is strong relation between Response and Treatment

Since the p value of the test is less than 0.05 and hence we can say that we need to Reject Ho here

Hence we conclude that there is strong relation between Response variable and Treatment option

Above analysis done in R.

15.34 Treating insomnia. Belsomra is a drug prescribed for the treatment of insomnia. A randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial found that patients assigned to take Belsomra for three months fell asleep 35 minutes faster, on average, than they did before the study started—a statistically significant improvement. By comparison, patients assigned to take a placebo for three months fell asleep 27 minutes faster than they did originally. The difference between the two groups was statistically significant (reported as P<0.01).14 Would you consider...
