▪ Describe the engineering aspects of two of MOSE Project and Thames Barrier
▪ Describe how fluid mechanics govern the design of these protection structures

Solutions

Expert Solution

MOSE project

MOSE is a critical large scale engineering project with the intention of protecting the city Venice and venetian lagoon from flooding.

Project is installation of 78 mobile gates across three inlets. In the event of impending high tides gates are individually rise up according to condition. It protect Venice upto 3 m high tides.

Thames barrier

The purpose is to prevent the flood plain of greater london from high tides and strom surges.

When in an oen position the barrier gates lie along the river bed to pass shipes ,when the they work as tight steel wall.

Use of fluid mechanics in protection structure

In every hidrulic structure application of fluid mechanics concepts are applies

In above to structure design of gates the total hydraulic pressure is comuted with the help of fluid mechanics concepts and on the basis of pressure material for gates thickness and dimension of gates dicides.

How much hydrulic force come on structure in its life time is also computed by fluid mechanics.

In MOSE project compressors are used so design of compressors fluid mechanics concepts are use

In passing of ships depth of water require design by gluide mechanics.
