Involunatary
admission to the hospital
- If the Patient is unwilling or unable to make a request for
admission it is called involunary admission
- In this case, a relative /friend makes an application to the
medical officer on behalf of the patient
- Medical officer makes enquires within 24hours
- If the medical officer is satisfied for admission Involuntary
admission is made
involuntary admission in to the hospital made under 3
circumstances
- If the patient pose a serious risk that they may cause
immediate and serious harm to himself or others.
- patients judgement must be so impaired that he need treatment
that he can only get in a hospital.
- Patients condition could get worse if he don't get the
treatment that could help his mental health.
Refusal of
treatment under involuntary admission
- Even the patients who is admitting under involuntary basis has
the right to refuse medications
- The exception of refusal is unless , unless they are
specifically found legally incompetent by a court of law
- Authorities allow a legally appointed guardian to consent for
the patient.
- Its undre the right of medication refusal and autonomy of the
patient
- Eventhough the patient refuses medication, the nurse have to
recommended pharmacologic treatments, including expected benefits
and possible adverse effects, and to explore fully the reasons
behind the patient’s refusal.
