Involunatary admission to the hospital

  • If the Patient is unwilling or unable to make a request for admission it is called involunary admission
  • In this case, a relative /friend makes an application to the medical officer on behalf of the patient
  • Medical officer makes enquires within 24hours
  • If the medical officer is satisfied for admission Involuntary admission is made

involuntary admission in to the hospital made under 3 circumstances

  • If the patient pose a serious risk that they may cause immediate and serious harm to himself or others.
  • patients judgement must be so impaired that he need treatment that he can only get in a hospital.
  • Patients condition could get worse if he don't get the treatment that could help his mental health.

Refusal of treatment under involuntary admission

  • Even the patients who is admitting under involuntary basis has the right to refuse medications
  • The exception of refusal is unless , unless they are specifically found legally incompetent by a court of law
  • Authorities allow a legally appointed guardian to consent for the patient.
  • Its undre the right of medication refusal and autonomy of the patient
  • Eventhough the patient refuses medication, the nurse have to recommended pharmacologic treatments, including expected benefits and possible adverse effects, and to explore fully the reasons behind the patient’s refusal.
