When would you use graphic organizers (such as maps, charts, lists, or graphs) in your writing? Give an example. answer should be in complete sentences and 200--500 words long.
An image quickly conveys information. However its application should
be optimal to makemaximum impact on the reader. An image should not
be used where its use would be tenuous (an image of clouds sans
horizon next to a mention of evaporation in an article the Great
Lakes, for example).
An image should not be used in an article where it would crowd the text or, in other words, there are already too many images. There should be a reasonable proportion of text to image.
The application of image should be contexual. For example, Images would not be needed, if the topic was abstract, like liberty or compassion.
Image should add value to the storyline instead of creating confusion or giving a different view. For example, if thev article relates to sports and it carries an image of a politician then it anly adds to the confusion .
Image consumes space in any article band hence it should be included only when it provides extra information .
Use of graphic organisers
Graphic organizers guide learners’ thinking as they fill in and build upon a visual map or diagram. Graphic organizers are some of the most effective visual learning strategies for students and are applied across the curriculum to enhance learning and understanding of subject matter content. In a variety of formats dependent upon the task, graphic organizers facilitate students’ learning by helping them identify areas of focus within a broad topic, such as a novel or article. Because they help the learner make connections and structure thinking, students often turn to graphic organizers for writing projects.Graphic organizers include various kinds of graphs and diagrams that organize ideas visually. They help readers to classify ideas and communicate effectively. They are of great help for teaching and learning for their feature of visualization.
Usually a graphic organiser is used to convey more in less. It is used when :-
1) to show relationship:-With vivid shapes, symbols and connectors, graphic organizers visualize the relationship between different parts. For example, Venn diagrams help students see and understand the common points and differences of things. Cause-and-effect diagrams help student find out the causes and results of an event. Mind map can boost students' creative thinking when they understand how different subtopics relate to the main topic. Flowcharts presents the sequence relation clearly step by step.
2. Visualize and Simplify Ideas-Since a picture is worth a thousand words sometimes, graphic organizers can simplify complicated ideas by visualizing them. Seeable ideas are more comprehensible especially for visual learners.
3. Organize Information-When there is a large amount of information, it is hard for the brain to decode and digest. Graphic organizer can organize the information in a logical way. If the learning process lasts for a long time, to comprehend and memorize information in a structurized way is easier. For example, a timeline is especially helpful for remembering the chronological sequence of historic events. A storyboard can help students summarize a story in terms of time, place, event and climax.
