Consider the molecule trans - 1,2, - dichloroethylene. (see Section 3.7)
a. Draw a 3D representation of the molecule. Describe the geometry and shape around each carbon atom.
b. Determine the point group. Show all your work, including sketches where you draw and label the important symmetry elements.
c. Calculate the total number of degrees of freedom and the total number of vibrational modes.
d. Determine the reducible and irreducible representations which describe all of the possible motions of the molecule.
e. Classify the motions (from part c) as translations, rotations, or vibrations.
f. Determine which motions (from part c) are IR, Raman, and/or microwave active.
