A rectangular laboratory channel has a bottom width of 6.0 in, a Manning roughness coefficient of n = 0.010, longitudinal slope of 2% (So = 0.02). The discharge is 180 gpm. Assume α = 1. The water depth is 2.5 inches at Point A, and 3.0 inches at Point B. The normal depth is 2.066 in and critical depth is 3.228 in.
(a) Use the direct step method with one step (Δy = 0.5 in) to determine the distance from Point A to Point B. Do this by hand, using a calculator. Show all work.
(b) Which point is upstream, A or B? Explain the reason for this answer.
