What is the region with the highest amount of carbon in soils
Ans.
It is important to understand first that what brings carbon in the soil. It is organic matter (especially the plants decay) which under high pressure and temperature gets converted into carbon and hence the early stage of carbon is also formed by these plants which are found in soil as well. The tropical region have rich vegetation but have a problem of high precipitation because of which, their organic matter is often washed away and thus they lack in carbon in the soil. Carbon is least in arid soil due to lack of plants grown here. On the other hand, in the permafrost region, there is huge carbon reserves in the soil but it is inaccessible right now.
Hence soil with more carbon is usually found in temperate regions. Histosols are the type of soils with large carbon content. In wetlands also you will find more carbon in the soils.
