While speaking to her friend she exhibited certain beliefs and cognitive distortions about her. Mentioned below are the statements which she often expresses, identify cognitive distortion in each statement and give a rationale of that as well. (Each statement ONLY has ONE cognitive distortion).

  • I am nothing unless I have a degree
  • I always have to please my family
  • I cannot cope with the exams
  • If I cannot cope with this, I cannot cope with anything
  • I always have to do everything perfectly well; otherwise others will look down on me

Cognitive distortions are ways that convince a person of something that is not true, these usually are the negative thoughts that are inaccurate and make us feel bad about ourselves.

  • I am nothing unless I have a degree- She feels like nothing without her degrees which means that the cognitive distortion is that her worth and value lie in her degrees. Polarized thinking
  • I always have to please my family- She feels the need to please her family which means the cognitive distortion here is that it is necessary for her to please her family all the time and she invests her energy and efforts in things that will please her family. All or nothing thinking
  • I cannot cope with the exams- She feels incapable of coping with the exams, she feels she does not have the ability and capacity in herself that can help her cope with the exams. Overgeneralization
  • If I cannot cope with this, I cannot cope with anything- She feels one failure defines her very existence, her failure at one attempt to cope with the present crisis means that she will never be able to cope with anything. Overgeneralization
  • I always have to do everything perfectly well; otherwise, others will look down on me- The practice of striving for perfection is all because if she does not do everything perfectly then others will look down upon her. She feels the need to be validated by the people around her. Magnification
