Provide examples of the following Structural conditions.

  1. Give an example of stress.
  2. Give an example of strain.
  3. Give an example of shear.
  4. Give an example of an item that has moved beyond the elastic range and become plastic.

Solutions

Expert Solution

A)

Suppose you are hanging on a rope that is attached to some support at one end

so to balance your weight the stresses will be generated in the rope that will be equal to W/A

W= your body weight

A= Area of cross-section of rope

B)

In the above described case there will be some elongation in the length of rope that may or may not be visible

That change in length / original length = strain in the rope

Lets take one more example to understand this more

When you strech a rubber band by your hand you see a elongation in the band.

from there the strain can be clearly seen

C)

you may have seen a running roof fan

so when this fan runs it applies a torque on the shaft ...that produces a shear in the shaft .

One more example

When threading is done in the pipes , nut , bolt , they are also subjected to shear stresses .

D)

you may have some time bend a electric wire of copper or alluminium

so the point from where you bend it goes in to plastic region and that does not become straight after removal of load applied by you.

There can be several more examples of each case .
