Recall a time in a co-op placement, a summer job, an internship, a student club, a student team project, etc. when your values conflicted with what you were expected to do in a particular, nontrivial decision, and you spoke up and acted to resolve the conflict.

Consider the following and write down your thoughts:

  • What did you do, and what was the impact?
  • What motivated you to speak up and act? Identify the values that conflicted with what you were expected to do.
  • How satisfied are you? How would you like to have responded? (This question is not about rejecting or defending past actions but rather about imagining your Ideal Scenario.)
  • What would have made it even easier for you to speak/act?
    • Things within your own control
    • Things within the control of others

Part 2

Recall a time in a co-op placement, a summer job, an internship, a student club, a student team project, etc. when your values conflicted with what you were expected to do in a particular, nontrivial decision, and you did not speak up or act to resolve the conflict.

Consider the following and write down your thoughts:

  • What happened, and what was the impact?
  • Why didn’t you speak up or act? Identify the values that conflicted with what you were expected to do.
  • How satisfied are you? How would you like to have responded? (This question is not about rejecting or defending past actions but rather about imagining your Ideal Scenario.)
  • What would have made it easier for you to speak/act?
    • Things within your own control
    • Things within the control of others

Compare how your responded to these two situations to draw a conclusion about when you tend to act on your values, and what is necessary for you to do so

Paet: 1

In every summer I would like to work as a tour guide.

  • In a journey to a certain place, suddenly an old man was feeling sick. He was panting and sweating. His wife was also worried and appealed me. I immediately decided to take him to the hospital. Such step would hamper the enjoyment of others. Some objected and advised me to call ambulance and send him to the hospital. The advised me not to be bothered about the sick old man. But I cancelled the journey and told the bus driver to go to the hospital.
  • I was firm in my decision. I did not think it right to leave the helpless old man alone. It was the conflict of ideals. Many other travellers said many offensive words. But at last I was satisfied and others also thanked me for MTV such decision. My company also applauded my steps.
  • I was really happy. As a tour guide I took the right decision. Again as a responsible person I also did the right work.

Part: B

In a summer vacation, I took the job of a hotel boy to serve food to the customers:

  • One day found that a cat put its mouth in a container of food. I said to the manager. But manager told me not to tell it others. He ordered me to serve the food. I denied to do so. The manager said me that it was a common matter and one should not be bothered with the matter. I was totally surprised. I openly opposed him and said that I would boy serve such infected food. Then the manager told me to resign from the job. I did so. I only appealed to the manager not to serve such infectious food to the customers because it might cause dangerous disease. I also warned him to take legal steps if he continued to practise this. He said that in future it would not happen again.
  • I did not complain to the authority. I just felt that it was system and most of the hotels follow the same line. Besides there were many employees and if I complained then it would hamper the career of many employees.
  • But I was satisfied with my decision. I was satisfied because I was not used to serve infectious food to the customers. I also made the manager cautious of taking legal steps. From my perspective it was enough. I was able to preserve my value.
