There is a light pole on one bank of a small pond. You are standing up while fishing on the other bank. After reflection from the surface of the water, part of the light from the bulb at the top of the pole reaches your eyes. Use a ray diagram to help find a point on the surface of the water from where the reflected ray reaches your eyes.

Determine an expression for the distance from this point on the water to the bottom of the light pole if the height of the pole is H, your height is h, and the distance between you and the light pole is l.

Solutions

Expert Solution

To solve this problem you have to know about Reflection

Step 1.

Definition:

Reflection: It occurs when a wave meets a surface against which bounces. On reflection the beam incident and the reflected beam are propagated in the same medium. The speed of the incident beam and reflected is therefore identical.

Step 2.

ANSWER:

The angle between the beam of light and the water is , this angle will call , then we have the folowing

for the first triangle formed by the light pole and the distance form point p to the bottom of the light pole

for the second triangle formed beam reflected and the person, then we equate the equations

As you observe a standing wave on a string (e.g. with a strobe light), you notice certain times when the string is completely flat. What has happened to the energy stored in the wave at those instants? b) Are there any instants when the velocity of every portion of the string is simultaneously zero? What does it look like? You are the loan officer at the local bank. A customer in good standing seeks to borrow money to start a business. The customer informs you that they will be able to repay the bank a lump sum of $45,000 in 3 years. What is the most you would be willing to lend this customer if the required interest rate is 15%? Assume interest compounds annually.
