Solutions

Expert Solution

1) Oxidation refer to

a) increase in oxidation number

Explanation -

Oxidation and reduction reaction are co-occure if one element oxidized another reduced.

Oxidation is loss of electron or increasing in oxidation state and reduction is gain of electron or decrease in oxidation state

loss of electron in oxidation process take place by gaining of electron by reduction in process that mean loss of electron and gain of electron co-occure thus, oxidation and reduction co-occure.

Number of electron loss in oxidation is equal to number of electron gained in reduction. Oxidation state (charge) increased in oxidation is equal to oxidation state (charge)decreased in reduction.

We can show this by taking example

Net reaction

Zn(s) + Cu2+(aq)   Zn2+(aq) + Cu(s)

oxidation half reaction

Zn(s)  Zn2+(aq)  + 2e-

in this oxidation reaction Zn oxidised Zn(0) to Zn(II) by losing 2 electron hence oxidation number increased from 0 to 2.
