: How the presence of water in soil affects the property of soil and its load-carrying capacity? Also, mention how the seasonal variation of the water content of soil will affect the settlement characteristics of the foundation?

Solutions

Expert Solution

In soil water is exerting buoyancy force on soil particles due to which wight of soil is reduces and behaviour of soil is also changes due to presence of water.

As we know soil is made of some minerals and either soil particles are bonded together by cohesion or frictional resistance or both. When water filled in pore of the soil then water can react with these minerals or it can reduces the frictional resistance or cohesive force and property of soil get changed.

Due to decrease in weight of soil bearing capacity of soil is also changed, due to decrease in bearing capacity of Soil it's load carrying capacity is also decreases.

Due to seasonal variation soil is saturated alternately and there are some minerals which is swelling and shrinking alternately. Due to theses swell and shrink alternately there can be settlement of foundation occures.

A long footing supports a wall carrying a load of 260 kN per m. The soil at the site is saturated clay having a undrained shear strength of 117 kPa. The unit weight of the clay is 22 kN/m³ and it is suspected that occasionally the water table rises to the ground surface. What width in m (1 dp) of footing should be used if a minimum factor of safety of 2.4 is required? The footing depth is 1.2 m
