2) Describe some of the deleterious physiological changes that are associated with night shift work.

Solutions

Expert Solution

Shift works, night shifts in particular, are the major cause for spoiling the circadian rhythms (natural day-night rhythm) which might alter the physiological functions and affect the physical health of individuals. The circadian biological clock is controls by a group of cells in hypothalamus of brain. The sleep/wake homeostasis and Circadian biological clock together regulate the sleep. Night shifts always disturbs this regulation. Some of the deleterious physiological changes that are associated with night shift work are:

1. Maladaptation syndrome characterized by disturbed sleep and gastrointestinal disorders.

2. Development of Gastrointestinal disorders, especially peptic ulcers.

2. Increased risk of Cardiovascular disorders and heart attacks.

3. Shift work disorder characterized by Insomnia, fatigue and excessive sleepiness.

4. Sleep alterations and inability to sustain a quality sleep after shift

5. Poor Mental health, depression and poor interpersonal interactions.

6.Aggrevation of the conditions in Epileptic patients.

7. Onset of metabolic disorders and increase in BMI.

8. Elevated blood sugar levels leading to Diabetes.

9. Increases the risk of cancer.
