It has been said that qualitative research uses “emerging research designs” while quantitative research uses “predetermined research designs”. Explain why there are differing approaches to research design when undertaking qualitative and quantitative research.
Answer:-
Quantitative research deals with numbers and graphs while qualitative research deals with words and meanings.
Quantitative research is used when we want to confirm or test something like a theory. while qualitative research is used when we want to understand something like concepts and thoughts. It is used to gain a deeper understanding of an event. It uses non-statistical methods to gain understanding about something.
Qualitative research uses “emerging research designs" while quantitative research uses “predetermined research designs” because in qualitative research, it generates theory from observations so we can observe which research design is emerging and use qualitative research. It focuses on specific depth and detail.
In quantitative research, it tests theory through observations and oriented to cause and effect. It emphasizes on things which can be measured and it relies on standard protocols. So, we use quantitative research for “predetermined research designs because it emphasizes generalization and replication.
