(b) A less developed country with a rapidly expanding urban population is concerned that its growing urban population will eventually expand to a level where there would not be enough land to grow the food it needs to support its population.

(i) Excluding importing food, propose a solution to address the concerns of reduced land on which to grow food.

(ii) For your solution in (b)(i), explain an additional potential advantage of the solution.

Expert Solution

These are some real concerns, where less developed nation are having an increasing urban population, causing less land for food to grow. Due to this food security problem may aggravate.

The most import solution is to adopt intensive farming to grow food crops. Intensive farming differs from the traditional extensive farming. Here in a small area more food production is there. This involves usage of high amount of labors and new farming tecgnologies.

It is known that appropriate use of fertilizer will aid in the increase of crop yield. Therefore, in intensive farming fertilizers play an important role. Also, genetically modified seeds will have a big impact as it is made considereing the threats faced to the traditional seeds. For instance, 50% of world ppulation depends on rice, which is consumes huge quantity of water. The genetically modified seeds would alter its photosynthetic process, it would be able to been grown in less favourable conditions.

Therefore use of technology would be the most important step to combat food security in the less developed nations.

Estimates of λ or r are often used to determine how rapidly a population is growing (or declining) at various points in time. For a population that is growing exponentially, we can estimate the exponential growth rate (r) using the following equation: where N(0) is the population size at the beginning of a time period, t is the length of the time period, and N(t) is the population size at the end of the period. In this exercise, we’ll use...

Rocket Beach is a rapidly growing city near a space program facility with a current population of 200,000. The rapid growth is outgrowing current infrastructure, including streets, sidewalks, lighting, and sewer systems. City council members have considered a variety of options to fund infrastructure expansion, including (1) a term bond issue maturing in 20 years, or (2) a one-half cent sales tax increase, or (3) an impact fee of $1.00 per square foot for new residential and commercial buildings.
