Show how you might synthesize the following compounds, using acetylene and any suitable alkyl halides as your starting materials. if the compound given cannot be synthesized by this method, explain why.

A. hex-1-yne
B. hex-1-yne
C. hex-3-yne
D. 4-methylhex-yne
E. 5-methylhex-2-yne
F. cyclodecyne

Solutions

Expert Solution

When acetylene react with alkyl halide it's will give acyclic compound. It will not give cyclic compound. But if you used alkyl-dihalide compound then it's will give cyclic compound

Hence cyclodecyne can't be synthesize by this method because you used only alkyl halide ( you not used Alkyl-dihalide)

LAB 7: ELIMINATION OF ALKYL HALIDES In Chem 223/237, you learned how to synthesize alkenes by eliminating alkyl halides. However, there is a great deal of complexity in the elimination reaction. Is the elimination E1, E2, or E1cB? Does the elimination compete with substitution? Does the elimination give a mixture of alkene isomers? This experiment will help to analyze how the choice of base can influence these answers. You will react 2-bromoheptane with either sodium methoxide or potassium tert-butoxide. Both...
