What are the two early schools of thought in psychology (structuralism and functionalism) and what was their approach to their subject matter? What are the six main perspectives we find in psychology? It is important that you know the differences between these perspectives in terms of their explanations for human nature, causes of behavior, and the main methods and strategies employed.   • The two early schools of thought in psychology were structuralism and functionalism. Structuralism was the first major school of thought in psychology dealing with the structures of mind.This was based on the introspection where the individuals dealt with their thoughts and feelings.Edward Tichner believed that the consciousness is analyzed in to basic elements, such as , emotions, images.On the other hand, Functionalism was based on the function instead of, consciousness structure and was interested in the variations among spectrum of individual differences.This school influenced the educational system.William James talked about this and focussed on the application of mind.
