1.- A balloon is inflated to a volume of 3.2 liters at room temperature (23oC) and placed into a freezer where the temperature is 3oC. What is the volume of the balloon when it reaches 3oC, in liters?.

2.- What is the partial pressure (in atm) of SO3 if 1.11 moles of SO3 are mixed with 3.02 moles of O2 and the total pressure in the container is 6.84 atm?

3.- A cylinder contains three gases; A, B, and C. If the partial pressure of gas A (PA) = 272 torr, PB = 119 torr and the total pressure (PT) = 873 torr, what is the partial pressure of gas C (PC) in torr?

Solutions

Expert Solution

1. According to Charle's law

V1/T1 = V2/T2

3.2/296 = V2/303

V2 = 3.276 L

2. molefraction of SO3 = 1.11/(1.11+ 3.02) = 0.269

molefraction of O2 = 3.02/(1.11+3.02) = 0.731

Partial pressure = molefraction*Total pressure

                          = 0.269*6.84

                          = 1.84 atm

3. Pressure of gas C = Total pressure - (Pressure of gas A+Pressure of gas B)

                                = 873 - (272+119)

                                = 482 torr
