International relations , the IR Theories are a framework to help analyse international relationships. They have 2 theory categories:

1. Positivist theories

2. Post-positivist theories.

Realism is a Positivist Theory whose claims were based around the ancient tradition of thought, like that of the Thucydides. It lays more stress on the conflicting and competitive aspect of IR.

The Theory claims 4 major ideas :

1. The states have real power in International politics as opposed to leaders and international organisations.

2. The political system internationally is anarchic which no or very less super national authority given to ensure rules are enforced.

3. Within the system internationally, the states act keeping in mind their self-interests rationally.

4. In order to ensure that there is self-preservation, the state’s desire increased power.

The criticism to Realist IR Theories include :

1. The has been given too much attention as a single solid unit without taking into consideration the other forces working within a state.

2. It also doesn’t recognise non- survival issues concerning a state

3. It doesn’t recognise the democratic nature of states which doesn’t wish to go into war with other states.

4. It also neglected the cultural and military aspects of power

5. It doesn’t recognise federalism where the ultimate authority instead of lying at one place is fragmented amongst a centre and its sub units, like a sovereign and its states.

6. It places too much importance on the European methods without exploring characteristics of states in the Asian and African regions
