Conduct an Internet search to find a study whose statistical results have been published in the news or any other public forum. Applying the following guidelines, critically analyze the study’s reported content and results.
Identify the goal, population, and type of study.
Who conducted the study? Is there bias here?
Is there bias in the sample used in the study?
Are there any problems in defining or measuring the variables of interest in the study?
Are there any confounding variables present in the study?
Are the results presented fairly?
Is the study’s conclusion reasonable? Does it make sense?
Do the results make practical significance?
Identify the goal, population, and type of study.
This study was conducted by American Bar Association: Commission on Domestic & Sexual Violence. The study was conducted on estimated 1-2 million Americans, 65 years old and older. The goal of the study was to identify those who have or may have been injured, exploited, or mistreated by someone who has been injured. The type of stud was done through surveying.
Who conducted the study? Is there bias here?
The Committee on National Statistics Behavioral and Social Science and Education. The study does contain bias, but I don’t think it’s because of the committee that conducted. The bias comes because none of the information cannot be verified.
Is there bias in the sample used in the study?
Yes. 2% to 10% based on various sampling, survey methods, and case definitions (CNSB, 2003).They never list the variables used for the study nor do they state how they got the information. Instead they inundate you with statistics that could be real or they could be over or under inflated. There’s no way of check due to the links for the statistics don’t work.
Are there any problems in defining or measuring the variables of interest in the study?
Yes, they are never clearly sated and the links they used in the article have either been moved, disabled, or no longer working.
Are there any confounding variables present in the study?
There are no variables clearly defined in this study.
