You noticed that your best friend's three-year-old child, Stacy, refuses to exercise, which you know has numerous health benefits. Give at least three pieces of specific advice and justify each one using the theories from (1) Skinner, (2) Bandura, and (3) Pavlov.

Solutions

Expert Solution

  • Praise should be used to reinforce her to exercise. Her each attempt should be praised and children of this age likes to be praised and encouraged. This is based on Skinner's Operant Conditioning in which praise is used as positive reinforcement that could increase the chance of desired behavior.
  • Children are good observers and imitators, they learn mostly by observing their elders and imitating them. So to make Stacy exercise the father and mother should be the role model for her, and they should do the exercise that they want Stacy to do. This is based on Albert Bandura's Social learning theory, in which learning by observation and imitation of various social contexts and interactions are explained.
  • If Stacy is taken to her favorite spot for exercising, this would encourage her to do exercising. This suggestion is based on Pavlov's Conditioning where a neutral stimulus, the favourite spot of Stacy would become a reason for her conditioned response, the exercise.
