1. Briefly explain Null Hypothesis H and Alternate Hypothesis. Give an example for each.
2. Briefly explain hypothesis testing process. Give an example.
Note: type it rather than handwritting.
1.
Hypothesis is an assumption about certain characteristics of a population. If it specifies values for every parameter of a population.
For example hypothesis: Average height of men is greater than
that of women
Null Hypothesis, H0 : A null hypothesis
is a type of hypothesis used that proposes that there is no
statistical significance existing in a set of given observations.
(The assumption we have we made ).
Example:
H0 : The average height of men is not greater than that of women. ( men women )
Alternate Hypothesis, Ha : The alternative hypothesis is contrary to the null hypothesis. It is usually taken to be that the observations are the result of a real effect.
Example:
Ha : The average height of men is greater than that of women. ( men women )
2.
Hypothesis testing process consists of three steps:
1) Stating the null and alternative hypothesis.
Null,H0 : The average height of men is not greater than that of women. ( men women ).
Alternate, Ha : The average height of men is greater than that of women. ( men women )
2)
The second step of the test statistic approach is to determine the test size and to obtain the critical value, for which we need an actual set of data consisting of heights of men and women. Before the samples are drawn it must be decided that which values to the test statistic will lead to the acceptance of H0 and which will lead to its rejection. The values that lead to rejection of H0 is called the critical region.
3) The third step is to compute the test statistic.
4) Once all the steps are performed, the statistical conclusions can be drawn.
Ha : The average height of men is greater than that of women. ( men women )
For example our test statitic value is in accpeted critical region we can conclude that alternate hypothesis is true.
