Assume you have a sample of DEET that is contaminated by m-toluic acid. Propose a method to remove the impurity, explaining how that would work.

Solutions

Expert Solution

DEET and m-toluric acid mixture was dissolved in any organic solvents then add the saturated NaHCO3 solution to the mixture shake well for some time. The mixture was poured in to separating funnel and separate the aqueous layer in this aqueous layer contained m-toluricacid sodium salt so it will not come to organic layer. In the organic layer contained pure DEET then solvents was evaporated finally will get DEET only

You are making sausage and your mixer is contaminated with citric acid. You notice that the water has seperated from the meat. You check the pH of your mixed meat batter and the pH is 5.0. Why did the water seperate from the meat? What are the different types of water that are present in meat? Which type(s) of water are likely to leave the meat at a pH of 5.0? Propose a method to separate a mixture containing phenol, benzoic acid, naphthalene, and p-nitro aniline. Phenol is soluble in sodium hydroxide solution but insoluble in neutral water or sodium bicarbonate solution. Benzoic acid is soluble in either sodium hydroxide or sodium bicarbonate solutions.
