Discuss the development of the Mexican DTOs. What are the current major DTOs and why are they so successful?
Drug Trafficking Organizations are those organizations that control the illegal supply of drugs as heroine, methamphetamines, and cocaine to U.S.A. These organizations carry out there illegal trade with the help of highly organized crime. This illegal trade of drugs occurs along the borders of U.S-Mexico borders. Intially in the beginning of the 19th century this illicit trade began as the trafficking of whiskey into the U.S, which then was replaced by drugs after the World War ll. But the smugglers of those days had smaller groups and it was not a highly organized crime. But due large scale unemployment, poverty and corruption in Mexico people took to production and supply of drugs as the means of their livelihood. This was benefitted by the trade relationship between U.S and Mexico which made border security lenient as a strict border security was not conducive for the maintaining trade, that required exchange of goods at a faster pace. The drug trafficking became highly organized, more sophisticated and involved higher rates of crime for control over drug production and supply, and for drug pockets. Thus, the DTOs emerged that controlled production and supply of drugs across the borders.
The current major DTOs are:
These DTOs engage in constant rivalry with each other for dominance of drug trade across the borders. The reasons for their success are, the corrupt political structure that gave them opportunities to ensure supply of drugs, market access, and even the protection of government officials for drug trafficking in exchange of lucrative bribes. The other factor that helped these organizations were the widespread poverty and unemployment that attracted people to illegitimate ways to earn money, these provided the organization with people who can managed with a small share of their huge profit. The other factor that ensured their success is the busy U.S-Mexico borders, that ensured a lenient security check due to heavy traffic at both sides.
