use any online video that tours a store, or you may tour your own home and examine it for stimuli you were unaware of***
Sometimes when we engage in conversations with people or visit retail establishments, we may not be fully aware of all the stimuli (i.e. signals) that one communicates with us. Becoming more aware of stimuli can improve your interpersonal relationships.
Identify a retail establishment (e.g. drugstore, grocery store, restaurant, clothing, shoes, make-up, etc.) that you tend to visit frequently. Think about your behavior-how do you act while in the store? How do you converse with employees or someone with you?
After thinking your behavior, visit this establishment again. Now answer the following questions to yourself:
Did you notice all of the stimuli before? If not, what barriers kept you from noticing the stimuli? If you did notice all of the stimuli before, what barriers do you believe keeps people from noticing the stimuli?
Reflect on how the stimuli may subconsciously impact your attitudes and behavior when you visit this retailer. What did you notice after thinking about the stimuli? How does this impact how you perceive your current self and how you perceive others?
Answer- I have been to pantaloons to buy some clothes for myself. Answers are based on my two visits (after the question) to pantaloons.
1. At my previous visit I did not noticed the color of the walls but I remember that it was a light color. In my second visit I have noticed that the color of walls are light yellow and green (on the main entrance and on some inner walls).
2. The floor is off- white (marble).
3. I don't frankly remember but I guess they are even.
4. English songs in a mild tone.
5. Good fragrance but not sure what actually it was.
6. Temperature was very comfortable.
7. They are standing on different position only some of them were talking to each other but very slowly and as soon as they saw a customer they stop talking.
8. No I didn't noticed most of the stimuli before except the front wall color (dark green), music (English songs) and the behavior of employees. I believe that I have noticed all these three stimuli as these stimuli have crossed my perception threshold limit for example the dark green color on the entrance wall is quite catchy that is why I have remember this from my first visit, same goes with the behavior of employees and music. The reason why I didn't noticed all the other stimuli is that they didn't crossed my perception threshold limit because I was just concerned about the cloth and my focus is totally on clothes although if these stimuli would have Crossed my PTL then I might have noticed these variables.
I didn't noticed these stimuli but if they were not there in my last visit than I will subconsciously think about then and my purchasing behavior might be affected. For example - suppose I didn't noticed about the talking behavior of the employees but if they were talking to each other and not properly attending the customers then I might have go somewhere else where better customer service is available. On the same parallel if the music is very loud and disturbing then there are chances that my subconscious will restrict me from going there.
After thinking about the stimuli I am concerning myself as a keen observer and on the other hand I am thinking that other people don't have any observation skills.
