Manual labor has always been the building block of manufacturing operations since industrial revolutions came into existence.

MANUAL LABOR IN FACTORY OPERATIONS AND MANUFACTURING

In early days machines used to do very small amounts of work and large portions of work were distributed among laborers. They were skilled and unskilled and made many great products which benefitted and made the lives of people easier. Example Car companies of the early 1900s.Now automation, Artificial Intelligence , Robotics and several other parts of technologies are booming. They are taking jobs of laborers still they can't replace humans.

Manual labor can be classified as

• Skilled

• Unskilled

• Semi skilled

Skilled and semi skilled laborers have much more job security than unskilled labor.

Skilled labor requires a significant amount of time to learn that specialized skill to do the job while unskilled laborers do not undergo any specialized training. Skilled laborers have to devote a significant amount of years or months into understanding the specialized field and it’s detailS. Example Carpenter, fire fighter, welder at car manufacturing plant, workers at moving assembly line fitting specific components in to a truck.plumbersExample of unskilled labor is construction worker,messenger, farm labor

Semi skilled laborers have middle ground they don’t posses high skill knowledge but they do have some expertise in doing the job and this type of labor group is safer to automation and other technological advances. Examples include Data entry, driving services, customer support.

Yes manual labor is highly desirable in modern industrial and manufaturing systems but mostly if they are skilled and semi skilled. For unskilled labors they are losing their job because many work is being replaced by machines.In manufacturing and production systems skilled and semi skilled labors job are still safe compared to unskilled laborers. Manual labor is still in trend and will continue to do so in upcoming years as in underdeveloped countries where cheap and very large workforce is available this eliminates the need of setting a costly machine system to do the job of human labor. Machines do depreciates over time and can have breakdown which will hit production output during [peak demand.Several works require human presence and complex understanding of job which machines alone can’t do that. They need to be directed to do the job. So yes human labor is required in modern factories.
